Brachytherapy (Internal Radiation Therapy)

Advanced internal radiation treatment delivering high doses of radiation directly to the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissues.

Brachytherapy, also known as internal radiation therapy, involves placing radioactive sources inside or very close to the tumor. Dr. (Lt Col) Ashok Kumar has extensive expertise in various brachytherapy techniques, offering precise, targeted treatment for multiple cancer types with fewer side effects and shorter treatment durations compared to external beam radiation in many cases.

Key Types of Brachytherapy Offered:

Intracavitary Brachytherapy

Radioactive sources are placed inside a body cavity (such as the uterus, vagina, or bronchus) near the tumor. Commonly used for gynecologic cancers (cervical, uterine) and some lung or esophageal cancers. This technique allows high radiation doses to the tumor while protecting nearby organs.

Interstitial Brachytherapy

Radioactive implants (seeds, wires, or catheters) are inserted directly into the tumor tissue. Highly effective for prostate, breast, head & neck, and soft tissue sarcomas. Provides excellent local control with minimal impact on surrounding structures.

Intraluminal Brachytherapy

Sources are placed inside a lumen (hollow tube-like structure) such as the esophagus, bronchus, bile duct, or rectum. Ideal for treating cancers that obstruct these passages, helping to relieve symptoms like difficulty swallowing or breathing while targeting the tumor.

Surface Mold

A custom mold containing radioactive sources is applied directly to the surface of the skin or mucosal surface. Particularly useful for superficial skin cancers (non-melanoma), head and neck lesions, or oral cavity tumors. Offers precise dosing for accessible tumors with excellent cosmetic outcomes.
