Radiation therapy

Radiation Therapy in Cervical Cancer

Radiation therapy plays a key role in treating cervical cancer and is often used to destroy cancer cells and control the disease. It uses high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation can be given alone or combined with chemotherapy (called chemoradiation) to make the treatment more effective.

There are two types of radiation therapy used:

External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT):

A machine outside the body sends radiation directly to the cancer. It is usually given over several weeks.

Brachytherapy

A form of internal radiation where a small device is placed inside the body near the cervix to deliver a high dose of radiation directly to the tumor.
