Stereotactic Radiation Therapy

Stereotactic Radiation Therapy

Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT) is a highly precise form of radiation treatment that delivers a high dose of radiation directly to a tumor while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. It uses detailed imaging, such as CT, MRI, or PET scans, to locate the tumor very accurately.

SRT is usually given in a small number of sessions (sometimes even just one) and is especially useful for treating small tumors or tumors located in sensitive areas like the brain, lungs, spine, or liver.

There are two common types:

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS):

A single high-dose radiation session, mainly used for brain and spinal tumors.

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT):

A few high-dose sessions for tumors in the body, such as in the lungs or liver.

Benefits of SRT include:

  • High precision targeting tumors
  • Shorter treatment schedules
  • Less damage to normal tissues
